JOB SEEKERS in the Capital Region looking to get into/back into the workplace now have opportunities that were not there pre-pandemic.  …and not just in the food industry!  This is the case in healthcare, insurance, technical/coding, the libraries, banking and other industries.

Here are just a few!  And as you evaluate the job, salary and benefits, don’t forget to factor in TRAINING that is being offered on-the-job or in partnership with an educational institution!

A friend and Staff Development Specialist with Capital Cardiology Associates recently sent me a list of job openings… patient registration positions, patient service representative positions, and patient info tech (medical records) positions.  She explained, “These are entry level positions with advancement opportunities!  The organization is more than willing to train individuals with no/little experience, if there is the desire.” She added, “Both Troy and Albany locations are on bus routes.” For more information, call Shannon O’Hare, HR Coordinator at 518-292-6248 or email her sohare@capitalcardiology.com.

As I was entering State Farm Insurance recently to pay a bill, I saw the HELP WANTED sign!  I learned that the agency is seeking two agents/customer service reps and are willing to train a motivated individual with excellent customer service skills!  They will even reimburse the new employee for the insurance industry training required once they’re hired! And agency agent Elaine Van Decarr explained, “With training and experience, a person can always find a job!” For details, call Elaine at (518) 439-1292.

Capital District Women’s Employment & Resource Center (WERC) in partnership with Capital Region BOCES are offering trainings (normally with tuition costs of up to $2,200) FOR FREE.

Currently, WERC and BOCES are recruiting for PCA, HHA & NA (Personal Care Aide, Home Health Aide and Nurse Assistant) full-time and part-time programs to start this month.  ONLY 4 SPOTS REMAIN!  Completing these programs lead to opportunities in healthcare…get your foot in the door and position yourself with growth! FOR MORE INFORMATION OR TO REGISTER, CALL 518-862-4709, email healthcareers@neric.org or visit www.capitalregionboces.org/adult-education.

A full-time Sterile Processing Technician training – another fast-growing industry! – in partnership with Albany Medical Center was completed early this month.  Another training will be offered sometime this Fall.

And in the high-demand, well-paying IT field, Albany CanCode is partnering Capital Region BOCES, Capital South Campus Center and the not-for-profit workforce development center S.E.A.T. (Social Enterprise and Training Center).  https://www.seatcenter.org/train-up-tech-sector/   Completing these trainings lead to Front End Web Design certification as well as their Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) Certification through the ATTAIN lab.

A class in FRONT-END WEB DEVELOPMENT (in partnership with Capital Region BOCES) will start on September 27th.  For details, email admissions@albanycancode.org.

In addition to free training, some companies are offering greater flexibility in schedules and/or remote work opportunities.  My brother recently reapplied for his part-time position at Kohl’s.  He was able to spell out his terms…the days he wants to work, the hours, even the department!

I have spoken to folks who want to return to work in office settings, but are concerned about COVID-related health and safety.  When these new or returning employees requested working remotely, they were granted permission, either on certain days or if appropriate, full-time – even though not in their employer’s initial offer.

And some organizations are offering assistance in applying for positions!  On the Albany Public Library website, you will find opportunities listed for library clerks and library assistants:  https://www.albanypubliclibrary.org/employment/  To make the application process more accessible, the library has posted a pre-recorded video “So You Want to Be A Library Clerk” at  https://albanypubliclibrary.libcal.com/event/8025099. Staff will walk you through the process of completing the civil service application.
